A mother of three from Middleton has narrowly escaped a prison sentence this week after being found guilty of stealing £12,000 from her employers that was used to finance her online bingo addiction.

Kelly Dunn, a former manager at a card factory shop, pleaded guilty to the theft of £12,000 at an earlier hearing. The money stolen, was supposed to have been deposited in the bank on her way home from work, but instead was used to finance her online bingo gaming.

The court heard how Dunn had become increasingly addicted to the game after a substantial win.

Prosecuting lawyers explained how the events came about by saying: “The company operates a policy where no more than £3,000 can be held in the tills overnight. Staff were asked to pay money into the bank. Between that period, £12,000 was taken by the defendant. When this was discovered by the organisation, she freely admitted taking the money.”

Lawyers representing Dunn said she had developed a 'chronic gambling problem' but had failed to accept at the time that bingo was gambling. She had a substantial win when she started playing and that has prompted her to continue, believing she would keep winning. She is deeply remorseful for her actions and very sorry to her employers.”

Recorder Maurice Greene, sentencing Dunn, said: “You're a woman of good character who got involved in bingo and gambling and you needed money to do that. It wasn't a case of needs, but because of a lifestyle choice you made and couldn't control.”

Dunn, was given an eight-month prison term, suspended for one year, and ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

The club refused to give her the winnings. The general manager of the club is reported to have said "Mrs Barrett had failed to make her winning call in time. Obviously she is not very happy, but it happens nearly every week. The onus is on the player, she or he has to be loud and clear. They are the rules of the game- it is not that we have not paid her the money. Everyone knows the rules.”

Mrs Barrett, said “I am crying inside. If that is the way it is going to be, I am not going back because I am wasting my time and my money. I have never won £500 in my life. I am so sick.”
The club manager invited her to come back and play a game on the house as a gesture of good faith.

A local businessman in Cork is making preparations to re open the former Waters Glass premises in Togher, Cork, after a €600,000 refurbishment of the premises that have transformed the former glazing business into a 1000 seat Bingo venue.

The Waters Glass premises closed its doors in March of this year and the owners found themselves looking for a new business opportunity.

James Barber said: “As an owner of Waters Glass I was devastated in March of this year when we had to close our doors and let so many staff go. At its peak Waters Glass employed 65 people.

Mr Barber has already started recruiting staff for his new venture and plans to employ up to 30 staff members in a variety of positions.

The facility, called ‘Rock Bingo’, will be located in the old Waters Glass premises in Togher, Cork.

The Barbers will own and manage the business. They have occupied the address for more than 25 years as Waters Glass. After investing €600,000 into the new project they hope to provide a first-class facility that will be managed by Mr Barber, his brother and two sons.

Dave Barber said: “Standard practice in Ireland for operating a bingo hall is that the club must benefit local charity…We are taking the time to choose worthy local charities that will benefit from the significant funds boost (and) would welcome any local organisations that require funding to contact us.”

Plans to develop the former Gala Bingo hall in Richmond Road, Kingston, into a 2,000 capacity, 24hour drinking and dancing establishment have been rejected.
Local residents had already voiced concerns over the proposed application when it came to light that the two men behind the project had criminal records.

After seven hours of discussions in the licensing hearing, councilors rejected the plans to create the Kingston Arena on the former Gala Bingo Hall in Richmond Road, Kingston.

Councillors gave a statement later on that read; "As there is already an overspill of anti-social behaviour from Kingston town centre into the vicinity of the premises, in particular the subcommittee believed the grant of this premises licence would exacerbate damage to cars, urination and vomiting in front of residents' properties in the vicinity of the premises, together with an unacceptable level of noise from persons leaving the premises in the evening and night time. With specific regard also being given to the police evidence, including statistics, showing the high level of reported crime and violence in Kingston town (Grove ward being the third highest in London) and the close proximity of these premises, it was considered that its location increased the likelihood of crime occurring at and in its vicinity."

Wayne Philbrick a student from Evesham has organised a Charity Bingo Night at Evesham Rowing Club on Friday March 30th to raise funds for The Acquired Brain Injury Education Service. Wayne has attended the service for the last seven years and has had numerous treatments, which included the removal of a second brain tumor last year. So far Wayne has raised around £200 from selling raffle tickets but hopes this event will raise a lot more.

The  Acquired Brain Injury Education Service was established at South Worcestershire College in 2025 in response to the almost complete lack of community based rehabilitation for those who had experienced a brain injury. Initially funded by the Manpower Services Commission, it became an independent unit in 2025, with professional staffing and its own management committee.  For ten years it received grant aid from Hereford and Worcester Local Education Authority. In 2025 The Acquired Aphasia Trust was set up as a registered charity to raise funds to support the work of The  Acquired Brain Injury Education Service . In 2025, due to radical changes in funding, day to day management of the Acquired Brain Injury Education Service (ABIES) passed to South Worcestershire College and now operates in partnership with the Acquired Aphasia Trust.

The charity evening will take place at the Evesham Rowing Club on Friday March 30th from 6.30pm to 11pm and tickets cost £1, including a buffet.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, police and firefighters were called to a disused Bingo Hall in Kings Heath high street, one of Birmingham’s busy shopping areas.

More than 50 firefighters were at the scene as the building continued to burn, with a great fear the building’s roof could collapse at any time. As a safety precaution, while firefighters tackled to blaze, the police evacuated seven flats close to the former Gala Bingo Hall, and closed nearby roads. This proved to be a good thing as the Gala Bingo Hall roof eventually collapsed.

Since the emergency services were called to the fire at approximately 06:30 on Sunday morning, the police have made a statement that suggests this may be an arson attack.

Roger Moore, a West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: “It would point to the fire as being – what we would call – of doubtful origin until it is confirmed whether it’s arson or not.”

West Midlands Fire Service said the fire was being treated as suspicious.

Two nearby roads have since been reopened, but police are telling local drivers to be prepared for possible congestion.

Investigators believe that the group have been taking the charity money for over five years, stealing approximately $1,000,000. The group had been running a regular bingo games in New Haven for the purposes of raising money for charity.

Lana Brooks, 55, Kenneth Brooks, 64, Steven Bouse, 60, James Schultz, 68, and 67-year-old John Gahan all face charges relating to the theft of the charity funds

It is reported that two members of the group received weekly payments of $1000 in cash each Monday from the groups finance committee. One such payment was intercepted by investigators and led to an admission by one of the group that they were paid “to run bingo”, which is illegal according to state law.

All five members of the group have since been released on their own recognizance.

Sacha Baron Cohen is most commonly know for his role as the West Side wannabe gangster Ali G. Since the filming  of Bruno in 2025, a film that revolves around Cohen’s latest character, a  19 year old Fashion Show Presenter from Austria, Cohen has found himself facing charges of assault and battery in a US court.

Richelle Olson and her husband claimed that during the filming of the 2025 film, Cohen’s character arrived at a 2025 Charity Bingo and proceeded to take the role of bingo caller, and took over the proceedings. During the bingo calls Cohen is alleged to have made allusions to his former male partner. This is believed to have been an attempt to get a reaction from the crowd, as is the style of Cohen’s work.

The scenes did not make the final cut and were not shown in the movie, however Universal Pictures presented the unedited footage of the bingo hall scenes to the court for  consideration. Olsen’s Lawyers changed the lawsuit to one of “Emotional Distress”.

The court ruled that Cohens actions during the scenes, satirized the bingo players’ views on homosexuality and gay culture and thus were constitutionally protected speech.

Alison Scott from Doncaster stole her mother's savings of more than £7,000 in just a few months to feed her bingo habit.

Her 70 year old mother, received a bank letter warning that she had gone over her £800 overdraft limit. After initially being convinced she had been a victim of some form of identity theft it became apparent from her sons investigations into the matter that the person responsible for the theft was in fact her own daughter.

Mrs Crane, a retired hospital clerical worker, has cerebral ataxia, which affects her balance, and agreed her 51-year-old daughter should help manage her financial affairs through online banking. But Doncaster Crown Court heard how Scott, with no previous convictions, systematically stole a total of £7,595 from Mrs Crane.

Scott denied any wrongdoing when initially interviewed by police, but later made a full confession and admitted that a large portion of the money stolen had been used to play bingo

The judge, Recorder Henry Prosser, said it was 'touch and go' whether he sent Scott to prison immediately but he had decided to suspend the sentence saying, “You don't need me to tell you how despicable these offenses were. On a large number of occasions you pilfered from your mother's account when she trusted you. When a mother can't trust her own daughter it's a poor lookout."

Scott, was sentenced to eight months, suspended for two years, and must complete 150 hours of unpaid community work as well as attend 21 remedial sessions at Doncaster Women's Centre.

A nineteen year old mother of two who won £100,000 on bingo to become one of Britain’s wealthiest teenagers when her bingo numbers came in.

A recently held Bingo night raised £300 for the Huntington's Disease Association.

Huntington’s disease  is an hereditary neurological disorder of the central nervous system that causes progressive degeneration of cells in the brain, slowly impairing a person’s ability to walk, think, talk and reason. As you can imagine, a disease of this nature requires lots of funding for research, and care of sufferers.

Gaywood Community Center hosted an evening of bingo in order to raise important funds, and awareness for the Huntington's Disease Association.

The event was a huge success as many local people donated prizes and attended the event and approximately one hundred people attended. Including a representative from the charity organization who received a cheque for £300 at the end of the night.

Money raised for the charity will be used to buy new equipment, fund holidays and provide support throughout the year for sufferers of the condition. A woman from Buffalo found herself in hot water recently, and facing charges due to an altercation at her local church Bingo night.

Alisha Askew is alleged to have won $150 playing bingo last weekend, but in the heat of the moment breached the bingo halls policies and was unable to collect her winnings. Alisha was not at all happy with this idea and went to the cashier desk and took her money from the counter as it was being counted out for the other winners.

Surveillance footage from inside St. Lawrence Church in Buffalo shows what happened during the final game of Bingo Sunday but Alisha Askew claims she was cheated out of her winnings.

St. Lawrence Church Bingo Chair Christine Blachowski is reported to have said "It was our last game of the night, and we tell the patrons they must be seated to get paid. She was standing up. She walked up, and then walked back to her seat, called bingo while she was standing, and then gave it to her male companion,"

Askew said, "I took the special and yelled and picked it up and the next thing I know they’re saying ‘You’re supposed to be sitting down, you’re not going to get paid, etcetera’ and I kept saying, ‘I want my money. So I went over there when I saw her counting the money and I took the money that I felt was owed to me from winning my bingo," said Askew.

After telling her side of the situation to a local News station Askew handed herself into police to face the charges brought upon her.

Of the nine charged, all but the three that pleaded guilty were either acquitted or received an undecided verdict against them. The judge has scheduled a hearing Monday morning to discuss the retrial.

There has been drama at the local Mecca Bingo Hall in Stevenage this past week surrounding the dismissal of one of its workers.

The dismissed employee was described as polite and hard working and was so popular with customers that fifty of them decided to draw up a petition to have the dismissal reversed.

Bingo-goer Carol Mitchell said: "We were getting up a petition to have him reinstated. He was a good lad – polite and hard-working. We had around 50 signatures. We just had an exercise book and we were handing it round. One of the managers took the book off of someone in the Mecca and ripped all the pages out. They were saying it was our property – they are not allowed to do that. He came and took the book of a customer and ripped the pages. He said we couldn't do it on their property. I just think it's pathetic. Mecca are fine when we are saying good things about them, but when we have a dispute they don't like it."

No-one from the company was available to comment on the situation. A spokesman blamed staff preoccupation with Mecca Bingo halls in areas of London experiencing rioting. She insisted however that the matter will be looked into fully.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission have surprised many online poker players this last week by announcing that it has granted Full Tilt Poker a renewal of its Secondary Client Provider Authorization. Full Tilt Pokers current primary eGambling license has been suspended by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission since June 29th.

Last Tuesday, the AGCC held a public hearing to present evidence regarding Full Tilt's suspended license. Full Tilts representatives requested that the pre-hearing application for adjournment be held in private to avoid making public, information that potentially could damage its efforts to find new investors in the company.  The AGCC granted Full Tilt's request, and after private discussion with Full Tilts solicitors announced that it would be adjourned until no later than March 15th.

The announcement that the Kahnawake Gaming Commission have granted Full Tilt a secondary license came as a huge surprise and has resulted in many online discussion forums being awash with speculation and concern.

Both the AGCC and the KGC are very prominent in the online gambling industry. Both regulate some of the worlds largest online poker, bingo, casino and sports betting brands.

The question being asked is; Why would such a prominent regulatory body choose to grant Full Tilt  a license of any kind when the AGCC, another of the worlds most respected regulatory bodies have already suspended the companies primary eGambling license?

Fire swept through the former Pavilion Theatre in Toxeth after thieves ransacked the premises and stole thousands of pounds from the venues Fruit machines.

It is reported that thieves broke into the popular bingo and social club yesterday morning and looted thousands of pounds from the venues many fruit machines. The premises safe had also been tampered with but the thieves were unsuccessful. The Rank Group, whose brands include Mecca Bingo and Grosvenor casinos, has emerged from its messy takeover by Malaysia-based Guoco with plans to take on 1,400 staff as it looks to expand its casino chain.

Rank are proposing to take on this recruitment initiative over the next three years, as part of a revised plan to complete a faster turn out of the companies new G-Casino format.

Ranks goal is to build on its already substantial casino portfolio, and they hope to have forty five casinos in operation by 2025. It is planned that no less than thirty of these will be the new G-Casino’s. Locations targeted for these properties include Stockton-on-Tees, which is planned for completion later this year, Manchester and New Brighton in Merseyside that will be completed  in 2025.

In a bid to modernise the chain with the new look G-casino Brand it has been decided that  an older-style casino in Kensington is to close.

The new sites have poker rooms, electronic games, bars and restaurants as well as casino tables and are designed to appeal as a night out venue to a younger, less formal customer than the traditional casino. The Rank Group, have also announced the appointed of Clive Jennings as its new finance director. Jennings has been promoted from financial controller and will serve as a director on the company's board.

The drama and confusion that surrounded the Rank group during the recent takeover have settled down this week. Shareholders eventually decided to sell off all but 25.5% of the company to the Malaysia-based Guoco, just under the 75% that would have meant that Rank Group would have possibly been listed as a private company.

One winner of the recent takeover is Ranks advisor’s Goldman Sachs, who are expected to collect a substantial part of the £4,300,000 costs that were incurred due to the boards repetitive changing of direction throughout the takeover.
Rank’s executive chairman, Ian Burke, has said that Goldman Sachs will receive a “big part of that” but went on to say that the £4.3 million was a normal amount for situations such as these, and that the company got where they wanted too in the end.

Throughout the takeover process Rank Group have continued to do well in the market with the first six month of 2025 showing a marginal improvement from £28.6 million to £29.5 million on revenues.
Pre-tax profits rocketed from £67.4m to £175m as Ranks accountants logged the final £162m of a £275m VAT rebate, leaving the group with 37.2m net cash against net debt of £123m at the year end. Rank is hopeful of landing a second similar sized rebate, as long as HM Revenue & Customs fails in its European Court of Justice challenge to recoup the sums. Rulings are expected by the year end.

Tuesday March 26th 2025: Representatives from the AGCC, Full Tilt Poker, the media press and members of the general public convened in London´s Park Plaza Victoria Hotel in the hope of finally getting some answers into the future of Full Tilt Poker. The meeting had been planned to discuss in public the suspension of Full Tilts operating licence by the AGCC last month.

Executive Director of AGCC, André Wilsenach, had previously said that the AGCC's choice to hold a public hearing in to the future of Full Tilt Poker demonstrates ther AGCC’s willingness to act transparently and will welcome members of the public and the media. Yet when media representatives arrived at the venue they were told there would be no WIFI, mobile phones or indeed any recording equipment allowed in the hearing.

Before the meeting began the AGCC offered Full Tilt representatives the opportunity to make any proposals they felt needed addressing.

Full Tilts solicitor Mr Martin Heslop opened, as many had suspected he would, by requesting that the hearing be postponed until a later date, and also requested that any future meeting be held in private. Mr Heslop went on to explain that to hold a public hearing could reveal commercially sensitive information that could bring to a halt any possible deal that is currently in the process of being completed, as well as the application containing confidential information that could have a damaging effect if it was to be released to the public which will result in customers of Full Tilt Poker being affected.

The AGCC eventually retired to a second chamber to discuss this proposal, and after less than an hour of the “Public” hearing, the members of the media press and general public were ushered from the room.

Reports of what transpired for the remainder of the day is speculative at best, but one piece of information that did find its way to the media representatives was that Full Tilt owed the AGCC a staggering £250,000 in unpaid licensing Fees. It was reported that Mr Heslop had made promise to pay the AGCC the amount owed with seven days if the AGCC granting his motions to have the hearing adjourned and held at a later date in private. These conditions were suggested by members of the media press to be nothing short of blackmail.

Betty Barnes from Grindon was enjoying the beginnings of a night out with friends, when she suffered a heart attack and fell to the floor. Onlookers stood in shock as one of the bingo halls most well know members lay on the floor, but a quick thinking member of staff rushed to her rescue.

The pensioner, was just about to buy her books at Mecca Bingo in Holmeside when she collapsed with a heart attack. Luckily the Mecca Bingo’s first aider Mr Ken Norton was close by and gave the lady treatment until paramedics arrived on the scene.

Mr Norton 67, from Grangetown, has worked in a number of roles at Mecca over the past 11 years, had to remove Betty's false teeth to ensure her airways were unblocked and placed her in the recovering position until paramedics arrived

Betty spent six days in Sunderland Royal Hospital, where she was fitted with a pacemaker.
Angela Heggarty, duty manager at Mecca, said: "Our staff are absolutely fantastic in any sort of emergency. We are very, very proud of them."

Betty has since been reunited with her hero, telling him: "I thank you with all my pacemaker heart – you deserve a bag of gold."
