If someone asked you how to play bingo in your local bingo hall then you could explain in about 5 minutes or so? Well online bingo is just as simple, if not more so. There are minor variations between online bingo sites but the basic game play doesn’t vary.

First step is buying the tickets, on most sites there is a buy now button clearly shown, click that and it takes you to the purchase page. You will then see the options min, 6, 12, 24, max. There will also be an amount showing the price per ticket, simply click the amount of tickets you want to play, the screen should then show a Total Cost, if you’re happy with this then click “Buy Now”. You have now bought your first lot of tickets (well I did say it was easy!)

When the game starts your screen will show your tickets, most sites only show the top 6 or 12 tickets, these are the ones with the least numbers required for the next prize and will change automatically as the numbers are checked off. The numbers are marked on the card automatically as they are called out, on some sites there are option to change the colour or style of marking or even the option to mark cards manually. You will notice that the band around each ticket changes as you knock more numbers off and it may say 3 to go or even 3TG when you get down to 3. On some sites when you get down to 1 number the card will gently flash.

When a card has won the site stops the game, if it is one of your cards then firstly well done! It is not possible to miss a prize as the game claims automatically for you even if you are manually marking numbers so no need to worry if you have to go away from your pc mid-game or are even disconnected. The winner(s) username will flash up on the screen and then game will move on to the next prize. In most 90 bingo games there are 3 prizes: 1 line, 2 lines and full house. The 75 ball bingo games are slightly different as there is generally 1 prize per game which is won by completing the pattern shown, again the cards are marked and prizes claimed automatically.

If a game has a Jackpot prize which is awarded only by calling house in less than a certain amount of numbers then this will also be claimed automatically, these prizes sometimes get to very large amounts and are worth looking out for, the amount of numbers needed is increased gradually so it becomes more likely to be won as time passes.

All winnings are added to your account automatically and usually appear on your balance instantly.

One of the big questions people ask about the internet (including online bingo) is …”is it safe?”

Well, we’ve all heard the other stories about next door’s hairdresser’s brother’s girlfriend’s second cousin who put their bank card details in one website then found that their account had been completely wiped out by someone on the other side of the world. But is this actually true and can it happen? Well the simple answer is yes….. and no. If you’re not careful and don’t follow some basic simple rules, then yes, you can lose your money the same as you would in real life if you left your purse open on a cafe table and went next door to have a look around. Make things simple for thieves and they will take advantage but with a little common sense then you should have no problems at all.

Obviously, someone will say that the weak point would be your password, and they would be right. Please don’t use easily guessed passwords for anything that you don’t want anybody else to get access to, this applies to whatever you’re doing on the Internet. Far too many people easily guessed passwords such as pet names, maiden names, dates of birth and it’s not unknown for people to actually use 123456 or password as the password! Any information on the Internet is only as secure as the password you have used, get into the habit of using a mixture of capital letters and small, and also numbers. For example, instead of spike2025 how about using S2p0i1k0E? It might look complicated but can you see that all I’ve done is overlapped the name and date and put a capital on each end. Just as easy to remember when you have typed it a few times but a lot harder for someone else to guess. Other people use letters and numbers that remind them of things. For example, they might have three children, Sarah, John and Peter, who were born in 91, 94 and 96. They might make a password like S9r1hJ9h4nP9t6r, complete gibberish right? Well, maybe not, simply a list of the children’s names with the vowels removed and the years of their birth date inserted between alternate letters, with the first letter of each name as a capital. Again very difficult for somebody else to guess but surprisingly easy for the password holder to remember.

The other thing people worry about is hackers, to be honest the majority of people will never come in contact with a hacker but there are steps you should be taking just to ensure your computer stays safe. Make sure you have an anti-virus installed on your pc, there are some excellent free ones available so it doesn’t have to cost anything, and also anti-spyware software, this picks up anything that has been saved on your pc for less than honest purposes, again free versions are available. The most important thing with both programs is to make sure they are updated regularly, this is usually done automatically. I won’t go into further details as there are a lot of sites who give fantastic information already such as the BBC’s WebWise site

There is nothing to stop you having an account on lots of different online bingo sites but just how do you choose where to start? Well firstly let me reassure you that Best Bingo Spots only lists established, well known, sites, we are careful not to promote new sites which offer big sign up bonuses but could disappear overnight along with your money so any site we have listed is one that you know people have been playing on, and trusting their money with, for a long time.

All online bingo sites offer a sign up bonus for new members (that’s the deposit £5 get £20 free type thing listed on the site pages) but the amounts vary between sites. So it isn’t just a case of looking at who offers the most, you also have to consider whether the site has special offers for existing members, after all you’ll only be a new customer once (as having more than one account on a site is against the terms and conditions on all sites). We have looked into this for you and the details of  what bonus games are offered is shown on the bingo site’s individual page on Best Bingo Spots, for example on Sky Bingo we have listed recent promotions such as Cashback weekends.

You also need to know whether the site has progressive jackpots, free games and even what tickets cost, again we have listed this on the site’s page so it well worth looking through the site pages on Best Bingo Spots before deciding which is the site for you.

There are lots of different ways to deposit on bingo sites, some are obvious, like using your debit or credit card there are also things called online payment processors. These are secure sites which you used to deposit money online and you can then transfer to your bingo sites or even to shops to buy items. I’m sure you’ve already heard of one of them, PayPal, well-known for its use on eBay but it has a lot of other uses as well. A lot of bingo sites allow you to use PayPal to deposit on their sites. Another well-known payment processor is Neteller, they’ve been around a long time and have been used in the past mainly for gambling sites, but they are now accepted on a lot more bingo and even shopping sites. But what is a payment processor and how would it help keep your money safe? Personally, I would stick to long-standing sites such as those already mentioned as their well-established and have a history of secure transactions. When you register for a payment processor site, regardless of which one, you enter your debit card and/or bank account details, these are securely stored on the site and you are given login details. From then on you no longer enter the debit card details anywhere else, all you need is your secure login to deposit on any site that accepts that payment processor.

Another option if you’re not happy using your bank card details online is a prepaid card, these are becoming more popular and are an easy way to get money online, the main problem with using them for online bingo is not all allow money to be withdrawn onto the prepaid card so you could end up with a problem on how to withdraw your winnings.

Most sites will only allow you to withdraw winnings via the same method as you used to deposit, therefore if you used your bank card then the winnings would go directly into your bank account when you request a withdrawal on the bingo site. The same happens with a payment processor, the money withdrawn goes into your account with the payment processor. You can then either use it to shop online or withdraw to your bank account. Withdrawal times vary between sites and also depend on how you deposited, if you used an online payment processor then a withdrawal can be done in minutes, withdrawing to your bank account varies from over night right up to two weeks. There should be more specific information on your bingo site.

If you are fortunate enough to win a large amount then don’t be surprised if the bingo site ask you to send them some photo id before you can withdraw, this is not them being awkward  it is in fact a requirement of money laundering legislation and they have no choice but to ask. In fact you might find they also ask if you would mind having your photo taken with the cheque and put on their site but in most cases this is optional.

Most online bingo games have a chat room so you can talk to other members while you are playing, in such rooms you’ll be known as your username as real names are rarely used online, this is for security purposes but it is reassuring to know that you could be sat talking to your real life neighbour and wouldn’t know it. These usually have Chat Moderators (often know as CMs or hosts) who make sure the chat stays friendly and are there to answer questions from members, their usernames will clearly show you who they are and their chat messages might appear in a different colour. The CMs often play games in the chat box, these vary from site to site but are usually very simple to follow and often award bonus credits to the winners, the credits can then be used to buy bingo cards.

You might come across some chat phrases, most are obvious but I’ve listed the most common and their meanings below

3tg – three numbers to go

2tg – two numbers to go

1tg – one number to go

gl – good luck

wtg – way to go

wdw(s) – well done winner(s)

lol – laugh out loud (generally means someone is joking)

You also might see symbols such as :-) or ;) just look at them sideways and you’ll see they are smiley faces or winks. It’s also common for “text speak” to appear such as evry1 meaning everyone, not all the members use this but it is fairly easy to work out. Don’t be afraid to join in the chat, it is very rare for someone not to be welcomed with open arms and you will soon start to recognise people and make friends if you use the same room or site regularly.
